If you’re asking yourself, “Hold on, I thought the plug hooked up to the electrical socket supposed the power?” then yes, you’re kind of right.
The plug accepts power from the electrical socket, in the form of alternating current. If that alternating current were to flow unaltered through your PC, no matter how powerful it is, it would fry everything inside that shiny new full-tower cabinet that you’ve just bought.

That’s where the PSU comes in. The PSU takes the AC power coming in, and converts it to the not-PC-murdering, useful, life-giving form of direct current. The internal components of your computer all require well-regulated flows of direct current to function properly. Or, you know, at all.
