#2: Compatibility With Motherboard’s PCIe Slot

Welcome to the world of PCIe, or Peripheral Component Interconnect Express, the maestro orchestrating the intricate dance of hardware connections in your computer. This high-speed standard acts as the bridge, linking graphics cards, storage drives, network cards, and all sorts of add-ons to the motherboard.

In this intricate tech tapestry, PCIe steals the spotlight, flaunting versions like 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, and 5.0, each with its unique bandwidth. The newer versions, with their boosted bandwidth, ensure swift data transmission between the graphics card and the broader system landscape.

But here’s where the story gets interesting – compatibility. Imagine a state-of-the-art graphics card rocking PCIe 4.0 sophistication, squeezed into an older slot like PCIe 3.0. Sure, it’ll work, but at a slower pace. The reduced bandwidth means sluggish data transfer, potentially impacting performance, especially during intense activities like gaming or demanding graphical tasks.

And that’s not all in the PCIe saga – there’s another layer of complexity with slot sizes marked as x1, x4, x8, and x16. These labels indicate the number of lanes for data travel. Put a card designed for an x16 slot into an x8 or x4 slot, and it’ll work, but with fewer lanes, affecting overall performance.

In certain motherboards, you might come across multiple PCIe x16 slots, seemingly indicating equal capability. However, the catch lies in the allocation of PCIe lanes. Even though there are multiple physical x16 slots, it doesn’t necessarily mean that all of them offer the full complement of 16 lanes. Some secondary or tertiary slots might function at reduced lane configurations, often at 8 or 4 lanes.

PCIe x4 in x16 slot

In a nutshell, PCIe is the gatekeeper regulating the dialogue between your graphics card and motherboard, deciding how essential data is exchanged. To hit peak performance, you need a precise match of their versions and slot sizes. So, in the compatibility game, attention to detail is key. Always dive into your motherboard’s specs before making decisions to ensure a smooth integration of these crucial components.

#3: Compatibility With PSU

Traversing the complex landscape of GPU and Power Supply Unit (PSU) compatibility is no small feat, often underestimated but crucial for a hiccup-free experience. Making sure your PSU aligns with your graphics card’s power needs is the linchpin for smooth operation.

Take a quick dive into your computer’s inner workings by popping open the case and finding the informative sticker on the PSU. This sticker acts as the oracle, revealing its power capacity. Next, delve into your GPU’s power requirements by checking the manufacturer’s specs, which usually outline the minimum PSU wattage for optimal performance. Your mission: confirm that your PSU not only meets but exceeds the GPU’s demands, avoiding any potential power hiccups down the road.

But the scrutiny doesn’t stop at wattage alone. Equally crucial is ensuring your PSU has the right connectors to accommodate your graphics card’s quirks. Modern GPUs often need specific connectors like the 6-pin or 8-pin ATX varieties, acting as dedicated pathways for power straight from the PSU.

For those embarking on the journey of building a new rig and eyeing a shiny new graphics card, consider a detour to online PSU Wattage Calculators. These digital wizards, skilled in their craft, only need details about your CPU, GPU, RAM, and other components. In return, they conjure an estimate of your system’s power consumption – a magical number guiding you towards selecting a PSU that can generously supply power for the entire ensemble, including that tempting new graphics card you’ve got your eye on. In the intricate dance of compatibility, diligence is key, ensuring each component harmonizes seamlessly to conduct an unparalleled computing symphony.

    • The recommended processor for the GTX 1050 ti is minimum i3 6100, which is 2 or I think 3 times better than your processor.
And you also can’t really expect something good from a 6 years old mono-core 3GHz APU too.
According to me, just don’t waste your money on any mid end products because your computer will definitely bottleneck the card.
In my opinion, save some bucks and just go for any low-end graphics cards like these ones:
      http://amzn.to/2mjpAnN
      http://amzn.to/2n5o2ME

      • Thanks for taking time to review and help with the decision process. After reviewing choices at my local store I narrowed the choice down to 6:

or replace my graphic card with Nvidia 1080Ti for 4K gaming or (3 Monitor Setup)
& Will my current motherboard support 1080Ti??

    • Of course yes your motherboard can run that GPU on it, but it’s all depend on your budget to just buy a single GPU or upgrade the whole PC. I’m only saying this because your PC’s Spec does look outdated to me, like a 6-year-old PC.

      • Yeah it is 5 years old but but don’t wanna spend much on it.
Can you please suggest monitor’s for gaming currently i’m using Samsung S22B370H (one monitor)
Should i buy 3 monitor’s or one 34″ will do
and which would be the cheap and best for both cases (34″ / 3-Monitor setup)
suppoting Nvidia G-Sync & Higher Refresh rate.

  60. Hi sir, im currently using xeon e5450 (mod) and gtx550ti with msi g41m4-f mobo.
But my mobo only support pcie x16 gen1 with ddr2 ram.

And for now i wanna upgrade my gpu to gtx750 zotac with pcie gen3 compatible.
I read alot from other forum before and alot ppl say lga775 mobo mostly support until pcie 2nd gen.
So i need to upgrade my mobo too isnt it ?

Can i ask for ur suggestion which mobo are compatible with my specs. I currently planning to use gtx750 and ddr3 ram and stick with xeon e5450 mod. About psu i can upgrade it later.

  61. HP OEM/MSI MS-7613 LGA 1156 Micro ATX intel core 7 currently have a gt635 gpu..trying to figure out what can I upgrade to like max wire. I know the motherboard is not supet strong but the gpu I really want is the gt1050ti. The computer is for medium gaming.

Which GPU can I run if possible a few options?

  62. Thank you for this article, it has taught me quite a bit. Unfortunately I still haven’t been able to figure out how to go about determining whether my old PC can even handle a graphics card upgrade. It’s a good system for the internet and I upgraded the graphics card a few years after I got it so I could connect to the TV. Would you be able to suggest a better GPU than the one I have now have (AMD Radeon HD 5450) that will still work with this old girl? She’s not worth much anymore, so not looking to spend a lot on upgrades. The computer specs are here https:// support.hp.com/ca-en/document/c02207223. Thanks for your help and for this great resource!

  63. Hi Madhur
I have a HP Envy 750-147nz and would like to upgrade my AMD Radeon R9 360 to a better one the fits my PC.
Do you have any suggestions for me?

    Motherboard: odense 2b47 ,PCIe x16
    Intel Core i7-6700
    12 gb ram
    power supply: 300W

    Thank you very much!
    Kevin

      • Well this depends on how much can i gain with a new one. Does it even make sense, or will i have issues with my CPU that will reach it limit soon?
I could spend like 500-800 bucks, but if i cant fully us the Performance because of other parts in my PC, it doesnt make much sense to spend that much Money.

        • According to me, I think you’ll get at least 4 to 6 times better performance compare to your recent card, in case if you upgraded it to GTX 1070. But make sure you also upgrade your PC’s RAM too because 12 Gigs isn’t that enough (as I see on official specs). So, at least make it to 16 Gigs.

  64. Hi!! i have HP compaq 6000 pro mt pc

  69. Hi Madhur
I have installed a MSI gt710 GPU into an old hp pc, but experiencing freezes whilst just browsing the web. I’m wondering if the pc is perhaps too old to handle the new card?
I have installed latest drivers from nvdia. PC Spec is HP GD997ET#ABU with an MS7226 V1.0 motherboard and intel 2160 1,80ghz core 2 cpu and 4gb ram. Im running windows 10 pro 32bit

  70. my motherboard is ASUS H61M-K , it supports DVI-D , my PC has a 500 W PSU
I want to buy a HD Radeon 7730 which has DVI , will it work?
Is DVI- D and DVI compatible ?

    • First, it will work properly. Second, after installing the card you’ll need to attach the Video Cabel to the graphics card (and not in the motherboard). So, why are you worrying about the compatibility? This card has 3 different video output 1x DVI, 1x HDMI, 1x DisplayPort.

  71. sir i have a motherboard msi 7527 g31m4 , intel dual core 2.7 ghz processor, 4gb ddr to ram. so which graphics card is suitable for my motherboard only for playing counter strike global offensive ? pls help

  74. Hi, sorry to botter you, i have a question, i have an old gt 730 which is this one http s://www.gigabyte.com/Graphics-Card/GV-N730-2GI-rev-10#sp , but recently i’ve bought a new processor, the i5 8600k, some people have told me that if i use the gpu whit my new processor and motherboard (Z370-A-PRO) it’ll damage them, but i’ve tried to game just whit the processor and its awful worse than my old processor whit the gpu please tell me if its ok to use the i5 8600k whit the gt 730, thank you in advance.

    • The reason behind bottlenecking of your card is because of the higher resolution support, which your new board and processor has but not your not card. at least buy GTX 1060.

  75. hello, me some issues living i computer by. another pc case motherboard on graphic driver no. so, motherboard in incomplete material have. (graphic driver of model & name the knowing i didnt.) model the which im not sure? already monitor cord being not. monitor cord where plugging im? hdd where plugging?

  76. hello, i have Dell processor: intel(R) core(tm) 2 duo CPU e 4500 @ 2.20GHz 2.19 GHz.
    RAM: 3.5 GB
    64-bit operating system.
which and how much gb graphic card should i use?
    please explain!

  77. I am having HP Pavilion p6-2361in Desktop PC, I want to upgrade my graphics card currently I am using NVIDIA GeForce GT620- 1Gb.. plz suggest me some options

  78. my dilemma, mine is a Dell 3668 i5 7400 12gig memory, has a Intel HD Graphics 630 on the Intel H110 Express motherboard and looks like pci express 2.0? trying to find a video card to run War Thunder using a 32 ‘ 1080p tv for a monitor. suggest an nvidia card with 2 gig memory and do i need to disable the gpu on the motherboard???

    • Go for GTX 1060 or 1070 (all depend on your budget). And also don’t need to disable or enable anything, just plug the card, put the monitor’s video cable into the GPU and then install the latest drivers and that will do all the configuration stuff for you.
Also, make sure your computer has a power supply above than 400 Watts.

      • The power supply is the problem, I bought a pny geforce gtx 1050 from best buy and it ran great except when it wanted more than the 240w psu could supply and the system would crash and reboot almost daily. Best buy sold me a evga 600w psu which I mounted externally but when I tried to power up the computer nothing, not even attempt to start. So I took it all back to best buy for refund. Not sure why the power supply did’t work, the oe psu only has 2 cables from it to the board one 4 pin to atx cpu and one 6 pin to atx sys all other devices are powered from the system board.
        Any suggestions?

  87. Hi Madhur do You help me with following problem:
    I have a mainboard from Gigabyte GA-M56-S3 (rev 1.x) with slot PCI e x 16

    Trying this steps:
    – BIOS Update to last version
    – Loading default and optimise configuration
    – Cleaning of slot pins, card pins
    – System (battery) reset of mainboard
    – Check that speed of PCIe 16 slot default is 100 mHz, but support clock to 250 MHz, but don’t clocking

Can You give me some advice how too resolve this problem ?
    THANKS in advance !…
    Milen G.

      • Hi Madhur, thank You for reply !
My PSUnit is FORTRON Model ATX-350PNF.
        DC OUTPUT: 350W +3.3V—-22.0A (ORG), +5 V—–21A (RED), +12V1—- 18A (YELLOW)
        P.G. SIGNAL (GRAY), GROUND(BLACK) (+3.3V & +5V=130W Max) (+12V1 & +12V2=300W Max)

        • PSU looks good to me, then maybe it’s your 10-year old motherboard who’s having a problem handing the GPU. You can still try to flash your BIOS with the BIOS Flasher Device which can properly reinstall the BIOS software and may fix the problem.

  88. Hello Madhur,

  96. Good article. You covered the subject at hand nicely.

I was needing some feedback. I have an Asus CM6870 series pc and would need to know what type of GPU’s are compatible and which would you recommend. Also would the PSU need upgrading as well with the new GPU…

For the exception of the primary hard drive which was updated to a Samsung SSD 500GB, everything in the systems hardware is its original pre-packaged. What can I say, the system is awesome back then and it still is. So the current GPU on board is the NVIDIA GeForce GT 640 by Asus which is dated unfortunately, not ready for primetime in today’s gaming standards. Also I believe the 16GB onboard pc memory is rated only at 800MHz. Nor really sure how all that falls into place.

There are so many questions when it comes to updating/upgrading components, isn’t there any software program or and a website that can just scan the internals to let you know what you have & what you can upgrade to. This would be most practical solution on this subject. Here we are in the 21st century with state of the art tech both hardware & software and we’re still asking the same questions as if it was 1999 which reminds, do you recall the yellow and black books that came out known as ” PC for Dummies”, lol.

Any suggestions would be very welcomed.

    Thank you in advance.

PS. If only I could add attachment(s) so I would able to provide a screenshot of the CPU-Z for you.

    • On this motherboard, you can even use GTX 1080, if your budget allows to. But with your current PSU, you can still use 1050 or 1050 ti, if you are not looking for some major upgradation.

      • Major upgradation is what I have in mind for this pc. I plan to max it out throughout hardware wise. The GPU (PSU if needed) and pc ram (since it’s only 800MHz) are the primaries for now. The plan is to keep up with todays demands and extend it’s life span hopefully for years to come but eventually upgrade to a new pc at some point which I’m holding off as long as possible.

Besides it’s fun doing hardware upgrades, lol.

Any manufactured brand is great for me, I’m looking at the best product performance for this model.

  116. Sir, I have Intel i3 7th gen, gigabyte h110m-h s2 motherboard. ddr 4 2400mhz 4+4ram. I am doing AUTOCAD works. What is the best graphics card I can use in my pc?

  117. Hi Madhur,
My current PC is above average for games, but I am looking to upgrade my GPU to improve the quality of textures and FPS. Don’t need ultra settings on most games, but i’d like to run Cities Skylines on high settings without lag. (My current set up only avoids lag on large cities with the max settings turned down to med-high).

I am unsure what pin connector my current Mobo and PS have to use for the GPU. Most newer and better GPUs seem to use an 8 pin connector. Does this have that? AKA can I use a GPU that needs an 8 pin plug for a new GPu with my current set up?

    Stats:
    Gigabyte H110 m-a
    i7-770k quad core
    rx 560 (current GPU)
    16 GB RAM (8 x 2)
    500W Thermaltake PS

    Thanks so much!

  118. I am using a g5910, can I know if this still works and if gtx 1660 super or 1660ti will work too? Since g5910 mobo is legacy bios
