All About Computer BIOS

What Is BIOS?

Computer BIOS is a software which starts to run when user turn the power on of the computer. It is the program who personally starts the whole system like hard disk, ram, video card and etc. to get the computer system started in a normal state. When you Turn ON the system, your computer’s microprocessor process and control the BIOS program which is always located in the same place on EPROM (Erasable programmable read only memory), what you can also called a BIOS Chip.

BIOS has been there in our computer since the days of DOS – Disk Operating System. The fundamental purposes of the BIOS in a modern PCs are to initialize and test the system hardware components and it also has a good role to load the boot loader of an OS from a mass storage memory device to open an operating system in a right way.

There are four main function of Computer’s BIOS and those are:

  • POST – Test the computer hardware and make sure no errors exist before loading the operating system.
  • BOOSTRAP LOADERLocate the operating system .If a capable operating system is located the BIOS will pass control to it.
  • BIOS Driver – Low level drivers that give the bios basic operational control over your computer.
  • BIOS or CMOS setup – Configuration program that allows you to configure hardware setting including system setting such as computer password, time and date.

Actually, BIOS additionally provides on abstraction layers for the hardware i.e, consistent way for application programs and operating system to interact with the keyboard, display and some other input output devices. It can arrange for data to flow directly to memory from the devices that requires faster data flow to be in process.

What Is The Purpose Of BIOS?

It enables computer to perform certain operations as soon as the user turned it ON. The principal job of a computer’s BIOs is to govern the early stages of the startup process to ensuring that the operating system is correctly loaded into the computer’s memory. The main purpose of BIOS was Input and Output Maintenance and that the reason why it was called “BIOS as (Basic Input/output System)”.

How To Use It?

BIOS contains a number of hardware configuration options that can be changed through using your keyboard and mouse. You can only use the mouse in latest versions of UEFI bios.

How To Access BIOS?

The bios is accessed and configured through the BIOS setup utility screen. You can use this BIOS utility screen for all system configuration reasonable purpose, like changing boot sequence or overclocking kind of stuffs.

The Bios setup utility in accessed in various ways depending on your computer motherboard and system model, some computer having its own bios key or some of will shows you to press some designated key like F2 or Del key on the system’s startup bios logo. However if your computer boot fast, it may possible for you to miss the trick to press F2 key.

You can enter Bios setup for UEFI firmware via traditional method: boot the PC, while the firmware starts to run by pressing the del or F2 key or you can also enter UEFI firmware directly from your Windows 8/8.1 or 10.

2 Main Group Processes, To Change The Computer Bios Setting

1st Group Processes (Opening)

  • Boot The ComputerAs the manufacture’s logo appear press the designated setup button to enter into the bios. The designated key varies by manufacturer, typical setups keys are F2, F10, F12 and Del key and it will also displayed on the screen with the manufacturer logo on every system startup.
  • Rapidly Strike Setup KeyNewer computer can boot very fast. Once you figure your setup key, you’ll just need to rapidly press it while between booting your computer. This will you give the greater chance of entering the bios and its possible you may have to repeat the process different times if you have difficulty with the timing.

  • Change Your Setting CarefullyWhen adjusting setting in your BIOS, be sure about certain things like what will be effect after changing that particular setting. Changing setting incorrectly can lead to system or hardware failure.
  • Change The Boot OrderIf you want to change what device to boot from, then you’ll need to enter the boot menu first and in that setting screen, you can easily designate which device the computer will attempt to boot from first, while the system is in the middle of booting process. This setting is useful when we booting something from a disc or usb to install or repair an operating system.
