Everything You Need To Know About – Motherboard Drivers

Motherboard drivers are the vital parts of any computer system that are responsible for controlling all the major functions of the computer.

The motherboard drivers act like a software interface in between the hardware motherboard of the computer and the software of the system.

As the motherboard monitors the overall functioning of the computer system, the presence of updated and fully working drivers are essential to managing the important functions of the computer system.

The computer drivers act like the software systems used for giving instructions to various components of the computer as well as to the software components to make the efficient use of the available hardware systems. A proper understanding of the functions of the hardware is included in the modern OS (operating system).

The computer drivers perform the role of providing additional information about using a particular model of the hardware.

For example, a particular operating system might know the usage of the video card. However, without the presence of computer drivers for the particular video card, various specific functions would become unutilized as the system would not know that they were present there.

How Do The Device Drivers Work?

The device drivers can be thought of as a translator between the programs that are used by the human being and the device that the particular program wishes to use.

In other words, a specific software program can provide information to a motherboard driver for explaining the operation it wants a particular hardware to perform. This information is understood by the particular device driver and then it fulfills the purpose in coordination with the hardware.

With the help of the various types of motherboard drivers, the driver and the specific programs only need to know about the way of interfacing with each other.

The importance of the Motherboard Device Drivers: A device driver is a small piece of software that informs the operating system along with other software components about communicating with a particular piece of hardware.

For instance, the print drivers inform the operating system along with extension about the program that you want to print open in and exactly how to print the particular information on a page.

The sound card drivers are necessary such that the operating system of the laptop or computer system knows exactly how to translate the 0’s and 1’s that consist of the MP3 files into the required binary signals that the sound card can output to the speakers or headphones.

The same principle is applied to the keyboards, monitors, video cards and so more. Most of the time, the drivers install automatically. They do not need much attention aside from the occasional updating for fixing bugs and adding some new features.

The drivers for each piece of hardware in the Windows computer or laptops are managed centrally from the Device Manager that are available in all the versions of the Microsoft Windows.

#List of Common Motherboard Drivers

Motherboard drivers are differentiated into diverse installation packages which might affect the various aspects of the motherboard. The main driver for the motherboard is meant for the chipset. This particular driver spans the basic functionalities of the motherboard.

It sits right into the center of the computer system. Each extra section of the motherboard has its own individual drivers –with one intended for the network architecture, other for the sound systems, etc.

As these drivers might be less significant than the motherboard chipset, however, any issue in the functioning of one driver could affect the overall performance of the computer system.

Here are some common types of motherboard drivers that determine the overall performance of the computer system:

Network Drivers: A network driver is a software program that is used for controlling the functions of the device used for connecting a computer or laptop to a particular network. There could be more than network devices including wired Ethernet cards, wireless cards and so more. Without the presence of the network drivers in the motherboard, these devices would not function properly.

The computer operating systems support the various network adapters with the help of the software known as the network driver. A network driver acts as a bridge between the device hardware and the software programs.

This allows the PC or the laptop for accessing and activating the hardware functions as they are required in the software programs. Some of the network drivers get installed automatically as soon as the network adapter is plugged in. However, sometimes, the users would need to install the particular network driver in the operating system of the PC or laptop.

Chipset Driver: The term “Chipset” usually signifies the small file in the computer system that would be required by the OS (Operating System) in identifying the motherboard that is present in the computer architecture. By far, the chipset forms the most integral part of the motherboard of the computer system.

In addition to this, the chipset drivers also improve the overall working of the motherboard along with its coordination with the other components of the system.

The chipset drivers are usually included as installed components in the system. The chipset drivers are usually found on a Compact Disk (CD) or some other media that are included with the new motherboard, desktop or laptop.

In case, these are not available by default, then the chipset drivers can be downloaded and installed from the website of the motherboard’s manufacturer. An updated chipset driver helps in the solving of all problems related to the hardware or software, video or audio card, RAM and several others; in an effective manner.

Sound Driver: The sound driver is also known by the name of “Soundcard Driver”. It is an important component of the motherboard that helps the computer in sending audio information to some output audio device like speakers or headphones.

Unlike the RAM and CPU, the sound card is not necessarily some hardware device for allowing the computer in performing its specific functions. The sound cards or sound drivers are a rectangular piece of hardware that consists of several slots on the bottom portion including the sides for making suitable connections to the output audio devices.

The sound card usually installs a PCIe or PCI slot into the motherboard. As the motherboard, peripheral cards and cases are designed in a compatible manner, the sound card or the driver fits just outside on the back of the case when it is installed. These make the ports of the sound drivers easy to use and access.

The sound driver is a part of the computer system that takes the signals that are coming from some program and then converts them into the desired format such that they can be used by the speakers and the headphones. This allows the sound cards in facilitating audio output from the computer and then communicating with the speakers.

But that time was long gone, when we do need to install a sound card into our laptop or desktop just to listen a “Beep”, and nowadays, mainly every desktop or laptop motherboard comes with inbuilt sound system and that’s the reason why you mostly need to install the sound drivers for the motherboard, and for the sound card.

To install the sound drivers, you would need a drivers setup file for the same. Moreover, the drivers setup file must be compatible for bearing a particular sound system and the operating system. The motherboard sound drivers usually come with the laptop or computer system that you would bring home.

Video Driver: A video driver is a type of electronic circuit that contains a program for allowing the graphics-mode application program as well as the operating systems to communicate with each other.

These drivers also help in controlling the monitor as well as the display units in displaying a video in a specific resolution. The video drivers would need to be compatible with the video display adapter that is installed in a particular system.

The video cards are installed in an expansion slot that is present on the motherboard. While most of the video drivers are of the PCIe format, there are several other formats of the same including the AGP, PCI or Motherboard Interrelated.

Wi-Fi Driver: One cannot imagine one’s life without Wi-Fi in the advanced world today. The Wi-Fi OS support is the support provided to the operating system for Wi-Fi and consists of two pieces: driver level support including management & configuration support.

The driver support of the Wi-Fi support is provided by several manufacturers of the hardware of chipset drivers.

The management and configuration support contains the software for enumerating, joining, and checking the status of the Wi-Fi networks that are available.

Several out-of-date and incompatible Wi-Fi drivers would prevent the operating system from making the proper communication with the desired network.

There are several Wi-Fi connection options like the USB dongles could do the work – but all of these would require the Wi-Fi drivers to be installed in the given computer system.

For installing the Wi-Fi drivers, the users can simply download the latest driver files for their computer systems or laptop. The users can also make use of the drivers disc in case they just have the CD or DVD of the driver.

In case you need to install the different kinds of drivers on your system, then you can make use of the specialized add-on software that are available for free. These softwares can be found on the official site of the manufacturer of the Motherboard & its Drivers Webpage.

All the different types of drivers that are present on the motherboard of your computer or laptop are vital for the efficient performance of the entire system. You must take into their proper installation and updations from time to time for enhanced performance.
